Rosener Among OC Women Honored for Accomplishments

The Orange County Business Journal honored five businesswomen at the 18th annual Women in Business Awards on June 4, when an additional Lifetime Achievement Award went to Judy Rosener.

Almost 1,000 people were on hand for the luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Irvine, setting a record for attendance. A total of 229 OC businesswomen were nominated for honors this year, also a record.

Rosener, who was honored with a Women in Business Award in 2002, is professor emeritus of the Paul Merage School of Business at University of California, Irvine. Her work over the past three decades has been groundbreaking, and remains seminal material on the subjects of gender-based workplace challenges, cultural diversity, and business and government affairs.

Rosener praised women who are willing to take risks in their careers to assert business leadership.

“Women have been devalued, and we’re working to change that,” Rosener said.

Advice

The crowd got business advice from Kimberly Cripe, president and chief executive of Children’s Hospital of Orange County, whose keynote address included early lessons from her experience caring for a horse as a teenager.

“A horse is like a business,” Cripe said. “It needs attention daily and direction. Success doesn’t depend on your alma mater or the number of A-list parties you’re invited to. It takes guts to tame a 1,200-pound animal.

“The most important thing you look for in a horse is spirit, and it’s the same with your team,” Cripe added. “Have spirit and passion for what you do. Hire people with the same values, and you’ll make a difference.”

Lee Ann Canaday, owner of Laguna Beach-based Canaday Group RE, accepted her award and challenged others to give back by “practicing moral ethics along with work ethics.”

“Work hard and use every gift you have,” Canaday said. “Ignore the naysayers, because people will always say you can’t do it.”

Canaday has worked on the sale of more than $1 billion worth luxury real estate in OC, and led her company to a status as a leading real estate agency in the U.S.

Other Honorees

The other honorees were:

• Nancy Nygren, chief executive of Irvine-based Girl Scouts of Orange County, which works with more than 23,000 Girl Scouts and more than 10,000 volunteers in OC.

• Laila Pence, president of Newport Beach-based Pence Wealth Management. Pence and her husband oversee a 19-person firm that manages more than $800 million in assets.

• Ellen Bancroft, partner of Costa Mesa-based Dorsey & Whitney. Bancroft has worked on public and private acquisitions, ranging in size from several million dollars to more than $1 billion, and more than 35 public offerings.

• Kay Napier, chief executive of Irvine-based Arbonne International LLC. The former McDonald’s and Procter & Gamble executive oversaw the company rebound from bankruptcy.

In-depth profiles of award winners will be included in the June 18 issue of the Business Journal.
