Edwards Lifesciences Corp. Chief Executive Michael Mussallem is set to join Sen. Orrin Hatch and other officials in Utah Monday for a ceremony marking the opening of the medical device maker’s facility south of Salt Lake City.
The Irvine-based heart valve maker is opening a 300,000-square-foot medical device plant and research facility in Draper, Utah, that’s expected to employ 1,000 people in coming years.
Mussallem is expected to be on hand with Utah Gov. Gary R. Herbert and Hatch, if the Senate adjourns by then, as well as other officials.
Last year, Edwards picked Draper for a plant to replace one in Midvale, Utah, the company had outgrown.
The Utah plant makes disposable products used during open-heart surgery to implant a valve as well as catheters used to remove blood clots from diseased blood vessels.
The company projects adding more than 1,000 jobs in manufacturing, business and engineering in Utah in the next 15 years.
Edwards received $11.5 million in financial incentives from the state of Utah for the plant. The device maker also received a $3 million financial incentive from the city of Draper.
