Biotech Company CombiMatrix Moving to Irvine

CombiMatrix Corp., a biotechnology company, is going to move its corporate headquarters to Irvine from a Seattle suburb.

It said in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing that it will close its facility in Mukilteo, Wash., and relocate its corporate base to Irvine, where it has a diagnostic laboratory.

CombiMatrix, a maker of tests used in identifying and determining the roles of genes and proteins, said in its filing that it anticipates shutting down the Mukilteo operations within six to eight weeks. Relocation to Irvine will be done over the next few months, it said.

The biotech company has about 70 workers, including 34 at its Irvine diagnostic laboratory.

CombiMatrix’s move to Irvine is part of a previously announced restructuring, which involved cutting costs by 40% to 60% and refocusing on its diagnostics business, including increasing usage of its existing tests, expanding its test menu, and improving reimbursement for its testing services.

As part of that restructuring, CombiMatrix is looking for a new chief executive to replace current boss Amit Kumar, who plans to step down by the end of the current quarter.

CombiMatrix once was a unit of Acacia Research Corp., a Newport Beach-based owner and licensor of technology and other patents, but split off from Acacia in 2007.
