Toshiba to Update Laptop Computers

Toshiba Corp.’s U.S. computer unit, based in Irvine, plans to update its laptop computer line starting next month.

In April, Toshiba America Information Systems Inc. plans to start unveiling its new Portege, Tecra and Oosmio notebook lines.

The re-introduction is set to be timed with the 20th anniversary of the first notebook PC, the company said. The move also is an effort by Japan’s Toshiba to regain market share from Dell Inc. and Sony Corp., two rival laptop computer sellers.

This will be the first update for Toshiba’s Portege model since it unveiled the laptop at 2003’s Consumer Electronics Show.

The new Portege has a removable touch screen. The screen can be used either as a laptop or as a computer tablet when it’s removed from the keyboard. When the screen is returned to the device, it synchs data that was entered in its absence.
