Walong Recalls Asian Jelly Candies

Buena Park-based foods distributor Walong Marketing Inc. has recalled several brands of Asian jelly candies after the Food and Drug Administration said six children choked to death on the sweets.

Walong, part of Buena Park-based Tawa Supermarkets Inc., said it recalled its “Mini Jelley Snack Cups” last week. The products are sold under the Kimbo, Asian Taste, Jin Jin and Shin Hsiang Jen Foods brands. None of the brands were linked to the six deaths but were pulled at the urging of the FDA.

The products come in mouth-sized servings in small plastic cups often with a piece of fruit embedded inside. The combination of the fruit and sticky gel can lead to chocking, according to the FDA.

The jelly candies are popular in Asia and caught on here about two years ago. The FDA stopped imports in October.
