Anaheim’s Planning Commission on Monday approved plans for a 580-room hotel at the corner of Harbor Boulevard and Disney Way, which sends the proposal to the city council to consider on May 17.
The $209 million redevelopment project includes demolishing the Anaheim Plaza & Suites now on the site.
The new hotel will include twice the count and includes 50,000 square feet of meeting space, 25,600 square feet of restaurant space, and parking for 949 cars, about 150 spaces less than normally required for a hotel and amenities of such size.
The hotel owner is an affiliate of Hong Kong-based Wincome Group, whose companies also own and operate the Anabella Hotel, near the Anaheim Convention Center, and Avenue of the Arts hotel in Costa Mesa.
It runs the Carousel Inn & Suites on Harbor Blvd., which it sold to Walt Disney Co. last year for $32 million.
The Anabella and Avenue of the Arts hotels are seeking to increase their room counts as well. Anabella would grow from 358 rooms to 634 rooms via demolition of the current hotel and Avenue of the Arts plans to add a second hotel tower on adjacent land to grow its room count from 238 to 388.
The hotels replacing the Anabella and Anaheim Plaza haven’t been flagged but both are seeking Anaheim’s bed tax rebate for new higher-end hotels built in the city.
The Anaheim Plaza & Suites redevelopment could start in about a year with the hotel opening in 2019.
