AUGIE’S QUEST TO CURE ALS

WHO: Co-founded nonprofit in 2005 along with late husband, Augie Nieto, after he was diagnosed with the muscle-wasting condition commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Augie was the founder and chairman of Augie’s Quest to Cure ALS and of exercise equipment company Life Fitness.

WHY: Organization has raised nearly $200M in support of research aiming to determine the cure, causes and treatments for ALS. Husband and high school sweetheart Augie died in 2023 after 18-year battle with ALS.

IN THE NEWS: Augie’s Quest is partnering with the Fitness Technology Summit, a conference for health and fitness industry execs. The summit, which includes the Augie’s Quest Bash to fight to end ALS, will take place in Las Vegas in October.

NOTABLE: Last year received unanimous support from the nonprofit’s board to be the next chair of Augie’s Quest. Board member of the ALS Therapy Development Institute, a research partner of the nonprofit, which Augie’s Quest has granted nearly $50M. In 2022, Irvine-based Eledon Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq: ELDN) revealed “positive topline results” from a Phase 2a trial for Tegoprubart, a drug which demonstrated safety, target engagement and biomarker responses in patients living with ALS.

IN THEIR WORDS: “It’s critical we continue the important work we started 18 years ago. We’ve shown results, and we’ve shown that our vision can change the face of ALS. I promised Augie on the day he left his body behind, that I will never give up his quest and that we all will collectively carry on his mission.”
