Chipotle Sets Goal to Slash Carbon Emissions 50%

More sustainable packaging and construction diversion on future restaurants are part of a plan Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. (NYSE: CMG) announced Thursday to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 50%.

The Newport Beach-based restaurant chain said it intended to hit that target by 2030 and is basing the reduction off its 2019 emissions levels.

The restaurant operator, with nearly 2,900 restaurants and plans to eventually get to 6,000 in North America, outlined four areas it’s focused on in helping reach its goal. Those areas include more sustainable measures for restaurant development and remodels, emissions reductions for third-party delivery and other related transportation, food supply chain practices and packaging and waste diversion.

Chipotle shares rose 1.3% to $1,799.65 in midday trading Thursday for a market cap of $50.6 billion.
