Mitchell & Ness Start Mash-Up with SI

Irvine-based vintage clothing and apparel firm Mitchell & Ness Nostalgia Co. struck an interesting deal with publisher Sports Illustrated that will include capsule collections for NFL, NBA and MLB fans.

The multi-year deal launched the first capsule this month, themed around the National Football League with an apparel collection bearing Sports Illustrated archived covers featuring former NFL players Howie Long, Dan Marino and LaDainian Tomlinson, among other players.

The assortment includes T-shirts, fleece and headwear retailing from $30 to $75.

Vintage covers with NBA and MLB stars are set to make up future capsules under the deal with Sports Illustrated.

It’s not the first mashup with a media outlet for Mitchell & Ness, which also collaborates with Turner Broadcasting System’s sports site Bleacher Report on T-shirts, shorts, jerseys, hats and sweatshirts. That line is priced from $40 for a hat all the way up to $175 for a jersey.

The collaborations reflect the continued blending of fashion and media.

Sports Illustrated, previously owned by Meredith Corp., saw the sale of its intellectual property close to New York multi-brand apparel and retail company Authentic Brands Group in 2019 for $110 million. The deal was seen as a way to boost the Sports Illustrated brand beyond publishing, while at the same time launching Authentic Brands into the world of media.

Authentic Brands is also the owner of Costa Mesa-based Volcom LLC, which last year also bought the intellectual property of the action sports brand from Parisian luxury conglomerate Kering S.A.
