Nike Inc. (NYSE: NKE), the world’s largest sportswear maker, is considering selling Costa Mesa-based Hurley International, Reuters said, citing unidentified people familiar with the matter.
Surf brands have lost their appeal among non-surfing consumers, who now prefer boutique brands and retro streetwear, Reuters said.
The company in May fell to No. 19 from No. 15 on the Business Journal’s annual ranking of apparel makers.
Hurley had an estimated 249 employees companywide, including 150 in Orange County.
