The S&P 500 was up 0.2% in trading to 2,429.01 as the market closed early to celebrate July 4th.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 0.6% to 21,479.27.
The NASDAQ rose 0.5% to 6,110.06.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond increased 1.9% to 2.35%.
The price of gold was down 1.9% to $1,219.
The Habit Restaurants Inc. rose 5.1% to $16.60 and a $539 million market cap. The shares had been declining since reaching a 52-week high of $19.75 in May.
Western Digital Corp., which moved its headquarters to San Jose from Irvine this year, fell 3.3% to $85.29 and a $24.8 billion market cap. The shares have almost tripled in the past year.
