Déjà Vu All Over Again for Register? Levine Meets Flanagan

You might want to think again if you think the situation over at the Register is settled under new owner Digital First Media. DFM is ultimately owned by N.Y.-based hedge fund Alden Global Capital, which gives no signs of a long-term interest in the publishing business. Indeed, the new owner flipped land and equipment for $34 million before the ink on last month’s $49.8 million bankruptcy sale of former Register parent Freedom Communications was dry (see related story, page 1). And just last week it struck separate deals to sell a group of newspapers in New England and the Salt Lake Tribune in Utah. Both deals offer examples of what sort of folks are buying newspapers—often prominent locals who seem to want to matter as much as they seek profit. The New England buyers were headed by a judge of some repute in the region. The Salt Lake daily went to Paul Huntsman, son of home-grown billionaire businessman Jon M. Huntsman, Sr., and brother of former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, Jr. Put you in mind of any potential buyers for the Register when—or if—it goes on sale again? You can start the parlor game by puzzling over our OC 50 issue, slated for May 9 … Plenty of intrigue at Disney’s HQ in Burbank after a misstep with Thomas Staggs, the one-time heir apparent to Bob Iger. Things look much more settled at the Disneyland Resort, where President Michael Colglazier continues to strengthen ties to OC’s community of business. The latest example for the incoming chair of the UC-Irvine Chief Executive Roundtable: He’ll pick up the annual Orange County Visitors Association Chairman’s Award at next week’s OC Tourism Conference at the Segerstrom Center … The OCVA is inviting the hotels and other hospitality businesses on its rolls to take a bow on a top-10 ranking among 50 markets listed as favored luxury tourism destinations by Ctrip, a prominent travel and tourism website in China. Some of the company OC is keeping when it comes to perceptions among potential tourists from China:  Dubai; Sydney; Switzerland; Maldives; Monaco; Seychelles; Bhutan, Iceland; and Hokkaido … A tip of the hat to the marketing minds at chipmaker Microsemi Corp., which has a prime spot on the center-field scoreboard at Angel Stadium this season. The billboard comes complete with a “Power Matters” tagline that’s an ESPN highlight waiting to happen—not to mention a likely viral sensation if any slugger can summon enough power to clear the bleachers and hit it … 2-Paper Town: Opposite takes gleaned from the April editions of a couple of community newspapers that look to be engaged on the bitter end of Irvine’s politics of plenty: “State Officials Order New Tests for Toxic Petrochemicals at Portola High School Site,” crowed the Irvine Community News & Views, while the Irvine City News weighed in with “Soil Retesting Set—State to Reconfirm the Safety of Soils at Portola High School Site” … Tilly Levine has stayed on top of fashion and merchandising trends for as long as anyone in the business, and the co-founder of the retail chain that bears her name managed that while making the sort of “significant contributions within the community for the benefit of disadvantaged children and families.” She’s due for the Champion of Hope award from Boys Town California on May 1 at the annual “Uncork for Hope” fundraiser at the Center Club. And yes, Boys Town California is an affiliate of the Boys Town in Nebraska of Father Flanagan fame.
