Orange County auto dealers sold 13,592 vehicles in August, a 6.2% increase from the same period last year, according to the Newport Beach-based Orange County Automobile Dealers Association.
The total is based on 8,224 new car and 5,368 light truck registrations in the county.
Japan-based brands accounted for nearly half of August sales, at 6,978, up 10.4% from a year earlier.
Toyota Motor Corp. led all automakers locally with 2,613 vehicles sold, a 14.1% growth, while Honda Motor Co. Inc. dipped 8.4% with 1,632 new registrations in the county. Mazda Motor Corp., which has its North American operations in Irvine, posted a 64.4% sales increase for a total of 536 vehicles sold here in August, while Subaru of America Inc. sold 305, good for a 39.3% uptick. Cypress-based Mitsubishi Motors North American Inc. sold 63 vehicles, a 37% decrease from same period a year earlier.
Domestic automakers collectively sold 2,735 new cars and trucks in the county, a 2.5% increase.
Chrysler brands combined for a 17.5% increase with 732 vehicles. Ford Motor Co. recorded 1,073 sales, up 2.4% from the same period last year. General Motors Co.’s brands—GMC, Buick, Cadillac and Chevy—accounted for 859 sales, a 1.8% decrease.
European brands saw a 6% uptick in August sales with 2,612 new vehicles registered here.
Customers purchased 829 vehicles from Mercedes dealerships, a 17.8% increase, while 615 chose BMW brand, a 2% uptick. Audi sold 286 vehicles, posting a 13.9% growth, and Jaguar sales added up to 30 vehicles, a 14.3% decrease. Italy-based Fiat posted a 173.3% increase for a total of 82 vehicles sold here. Volkswagen sold 335 vehicles, accounting for a 28.7% dip, but its Porsche posted a 10% increase with 87 vehicles sold here.
The U.S. operations of two South Korea-based brands saw their combined August sales drop 6.2% year-over-year, for a total of 1,267 vehicles.
Fountain Valley-based Hyundai Motor America Inc. sold 720 vehicles, a 9.2% decrease from a year earlier. Kia Motors America Inc. in Irvine sold 547 vehicles through OC dealers, a 2% drop.
Auto sales in OC have risen each month this year, for a year-to-date increase of 7.7% with 116,208 vehicles sold.
