OC Marketing Firm to Help Goodwill Go Mobile

Fountain Valley-based MEDL Mobile Inc. said it’s been hired by Goodwill of Orange County to develop a mobile version of its auction website, ShopGoodwill.com.

The application will support nearly 100 local Goodwill agencies nationwide and allow users to bid on high-value items that have been donated to the nonprofit organization, according to MEDL.

“It is vital to (the) mission of Goodwill to maximize the value of every donation and this application helps us achieve that goal,” Joe Burke, Goodwill’s vice president of marketing and community development, said in a news release. “We turned to MEDL, an expert in the category, to help us develop an application that is truly best in class and integrates our mission into every click, bid and auction item won.”

The value of the initial phase of the contract is $25,000.

MEDL, which is traded over-the-counter, has a market capitalization of $10 million.

The company has led mobile strategy, development, marketing and monetization for clients such as Hyundai Motor America Inc., Taco Bell Corp., Monster.com and The New York Times Co.

“I’m a longtime fan of Goodwill and their mission,” Dave Swartz, MEDL’s president, said in the release. “A significant percentage of the money spent at Goodwill goes toward helping people overcome challenges—and we are excited to create an app that will help drive new revenues to the Goodwill bottom line.”

New Hires

The new year has ushered in numerous new faces in marketing departments across Orange County:

• Kia Motors America in Irvine promoted Tim Chaney to vice president of marketing communications.

Chaney, who joined Kia in 2001, will continue to oversee and execute marketing communications strategies as before while also concentrating on “brand growth and familiarity, product awareness and purchase consideration,” according to a news release.

• Costa Mesa Conference & Visitor Bureau hired Linda Ta as its new marketing manager. Ta most recently hails from Newegg Inc., where she served in product marketing and merchandising.

• Electric in San Clemente hired Zach Boon as its new global vice president of marketing.

• Word & Brown Cos. in Orange hired Paula Serios as its new chief marketing officer.

• Morgan Marketing and Public Relations LLC in Irvine hired Carolyn Etyemezian as its senior account executive, a new position.

The Delicious One

A lovable sprinting hot dog will be the face of Wienerschnitzel’s 2014 marketing campaign. The mascot, dubbed “The Delicious One,” is making a comeback—it debuted in 1999 for the Irvine-based fast-food chain and was last featured in 2008.

The campaign includes a series of 30-second animated TV commercials featuring The Delicious One and “catchy jingles reminiscent of the early 1960s, when the company was founded.”

“We wanted to find a fun way to bring back our much-loved mascot while still paying tribute to the brand’s rich 1960s heritage that we’re so proud of,” Tom Amberger, Wienerschnitzel’s vice president of marketing, said in a news release. “Our goal is to transport guests back in time with a campaign that resonates with our longtime customers while also appealing to our newer hot dog-loving fans. We are all excited to be working with [the mascot] again!”

Wienerschnitzel’s advertising agency of record, DGWB Advertising and Communications in Santa Ana, and Renegade Animation in Glendale produced the ads.

Taco Bell and Pandora

Taco Bell Corp. in Irvine is among several brands participating in Internet radio streaming company Pandora’s rollout of advertising in vehicles.
