The S&P 500 was down 0.19% to 1,844.95 in afternoon trading Thursday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was off 0.40% to 16,415.31, while the Nasdaq was up 0.04% to 4,216.63.

The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond slipped 1.35% to 2.85%.

The price of gold rose 0.19% to $1,240.70 per ounce.


Anaheim –based drug developer Questcor Pharmaceuticals Inc. rose 10% to $60.65 for a market value of $3.57 billion. The company said last month that shareholders at the end of the business day Jan. 17 would be eligible to receive a quarterly cash dividend of 30 cents per share.


Costa Mesa networking equipment maker Emulex Corp. rose 4% to $7.56 after Bank of America Merrill Lynch raised its rating on the company's stock from "underperform" to "buy.” The company had a recent market value of $693.43 million.
