The S&P 500 was up 0.09% to 1,698.91 in afternoon trading Wednesday.
The Dow Jones industrial average was off 0.08% to 15,322.74, while the Nasdaq was up 0.20% to 3,775.87.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond slipped 0.45% to 2.64%.
The price of gold rose 1.56% to $1,336.90 per ounce.
Lake Forest-based Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide Inc. shares surged about 21% to $3.18 after the company said it was awarded a $9.3 million production contract for compressed natural gas storage tanks that will be used for heavy-duty trucks. Quantum had a recent market value of $47.56 million.
Santa Ana-based title insurance company First American Financial Corp. was up about 3% to $24.53 for a market value of $2.62 billion. The company passed its 200-day moving average in Tuesday trading.
