The Dow Jones Industrial Average was off 0.25% to 15,986.16, while the Nasdaq was down 0.20% to 4,060.71.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond slipped 2.17% to 2.80%.
The price of gold rose 2.23% to $1,261.70 per ounce.
Irvine-based chipmaker Broadcom Corp. was up about 2% to $28.50, after the company raised its fourth-quarter revenue guidance. Broadcom had a recent market value of $16.19 billion.
Aliso Viejo networking-equipment maker QLogic Corp. was down about 3% to $11.48 for a market value of $995.99 million. The company announced on Monday the appointment of Prasad Rampalli to president and chief executive.
Huntington Beach-based BJ's Restaurants Inc. was down about 3% to $29.32 for a market value of $827.62 million. Restaurant companies were generally down on Tuesday.
Aliso Viejo-based Avanir Pharmaceuticals Inc. was down about 4% to $4.23 for a market value of $615.33 million. The company is expected to release its fourth-quarter results after market close Tuesday.
