Orange County-based automakers reported robust August sales.

The August seasonally adjusted annual rate—a key industry measure that forecasts sales for the year nationally—was 12.1 million, according to industry data website Motor Intelligence, part of Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey-based Autodata Corp.

Hyundai Motor America Inc., the largest automaker with operations here, reported sales up 9% to 58,505 vehicles.

Hyundai, part of South Korea’s Hyundai Kia Automotive Group, has temporary headquarters in Costa Mesa while its new office space in Fountain Valley is under construction.

The Hyundai Sonata sedan led the sales gain, edging up 3% last month from a year earlier to 20,682 last month.

Hyundai’s sister company, Irvine-based Kia Motors America Inc. is already close to surpassing its annual sales record set last year at 350,000 vehicles.

Kia said it expects to past that mark by the end of this month. It had sold 331,796 vehicles, including 41,188 in August, a 26.9% gain compared to a year ago. It was Kia's best August ever for sales.

Brea-based American Suzuki Motor Corp. saw August sales up 32% from a year earlier to 2,409 vehicles.

The automaker saw strong sales of its SX4 sedan, crossover and hatchback models, up a combined 38% from a year earlier to 1,181.

Irvine-based Mazda North American Operations saw August sales up 14.7% from a year earlier to 22,632 vehicles.

Mitsubishi Motors North America, headquartered in Cypress, reported the largest gain in August sales compared with a year earlier.

The automaker saw sales increase 86% to 7,985 vehicles sold.
