South Korean Game Maker NCSoft Discloses Local Buy

South Korean game developer NCSoft Corp. has taken the wraps off its buy of Aliso Viejo-based Carbine Studios, an offshoot of Irvine’s Blizzard Entertainment.

NCSoft actually bought the studio two years ago. The company waited until now to disclose the deal while Carbine’s founders picked a name and built up operations.

Terms of the buy aren’t known.

Carbine was started by developers who were part of the team that developed Blizzard’s “World of Warcraft” series of games played by millions of people over the Internet.

Carbine is working on a multiplayer online game for NCSoft, which has yearly sales of about $350 million and owns other U.S. game developers.

NCSoft’s biggest game is “Lineage,” which counts more than 3 million online subscribers.

Blizzard, part of France’s Vivendi, is the leader of what are called massively multiplayer games. Some 9 million people play “World of Warcraft.”
