The Angels
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
What a ridiculous and insulting name change!
For several decades the Orange County corporate community has been in the forefront of enriching, building and defining the unique county that we are. The citizens and hard-working residents of our towns have invested and created a world renowned and distinctive environment.
When Arte Moreno came to OC he was welcomed with open arms. The Business Journal brought together OC community leaders and corporate executives at a luncheon for Arte, where he spoke passionately about his love of OC and Anaheim.
Certainly the seemingly kind and warm owner has turned on his new home and supporters with a vengeance.
Why waste any time with needless lawsuits and protracted wrangling to correct this insult?
It would be very simple to engage free market dynamics to correct this problem immediately. The community and business leaders that so warmly welcomed Arte should come together again, but this time, in unison, to cancel season tickets and boycott the team.
If the community had the savvy, wisdom and strength to do so, the name change would disappear in about two nanoseconds.

“What if” there was a campaign suggesting that, at all home games, Angels fans wear “Dodger Blue”?
What could be simpler, less costly to the fans, and more of a statement about the displeasure we all feel about our team and our area being disrespected by this interloper?

The name “Anaheim Angels”
Has officially given way
To another name that’s tied
To another town far away.
It’s now The Los Angeles
Angels of Anaheim
The sound of which isn’t what some
Would instantly call sublime.
I wondered if Arte Moreno
Was planning to move the team
Insiders say probably not,
But may have in mind another scheme.
He may just expand the franchise
And then he will consider
Selling the team off to the
Proverbial highest bidder.
In any event, this decision
May be the one to blame
If other area businesses
Decide to change their name.
“The O.C.” ratings are down
Fox shouldn’t be complacent
Perhaps they now should call it
“The El Segundo-Adjacent.”

The Bankruptcy
Rick Reiff’s “Lessons” Commentary in the Dec. 13 issue serves as the best 10-year post mortem of the Orange County bankruptcy.
Only the OCBJ (and Reiff), with its financial perspective can provide both the big picture and the gory details.
“Lessons” also outlines that there was no material impact on the county and that there have been few meaningful reforms.
The lack of impact is a tribute to the strength and resiliency of the county’s economy and the lack of reforms a testament to the depth of our denial.

Beauties
I read with great interest Sherri Cruz’s Dec. 13 article about Planet Beauty and was surprised to see that Pure Beauty was omitted from the listing of its competitors.
Pure Beauty has seven stores in Orange County, one each in Costa Mesa, Fullerton, Huntington Beach, Newport Coast and Rancho Santa Margarita, and two in Irvine.
Pure Beauty also offers similar services to Planet Beauty. Pure Beauty launched in 1999. It operates more than 60 locations throughout the U.S., as well as purebeauty.com.
