Toshiba Buys Danka Unit

Irvine-based Toshiba America Business Solutions Inc. bought the Latin American unit of Danka Business Systems PLC, the companies said Tuesday.

Britain’s Danka Business Systems sells, services and leases copiers and other office equipment for Toshiba as well as its rivals Ricoh Corp., Canon Inc. and Xerox Corp.

The buy is part of Toshiba’s strategy to acquire large dealers in top markets to boost sales. The acquisition price was between $13 million and $19 million, according to Toshiba.

“This acquisition gives us a solid direct presence in Latin America to complement our already robust independent dealer channel,” said Rick Taylor, who was recently named chief executive of Toshiba America Business Solutions.

Toshiba America Business Solutions is part of Japan’s Toshiba Corp. and sells and services copiers, fax machines, printers and other office equipment in the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean.

In a recent Business Journal interview, Taylor outlined a plan to grow via acquisitions. The Danka Systems unit in Latin America is the third under Taylor’s watch.

Toshiba bought 35 companies, mostly copier dealers, worth $70 million in the U.S. and Latin American market in the last decade, Taylor said.

The Danka business serves Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico and Venezuela and will adopt the Toshiba name soon. The unit has annual sales of about $39 million.

Toshiba America Business Solutions is estimated to have yearly sales of $275 million and employs about 3,100 people, including 300 in Orange County.
