Sales Up at PacSun, Wet Seal

Foothill Ranch-based retailer Wet Seal Inc. continued its rebound in October while Anaheim’s Pacific Sunwear of California Inc. posted its second solid month in a row.

Wet Seal, which closed more than 100 unprofitable stores and revamped its management during the past year, said sales at stores open at least a year rose 47% in October.

The company, which runs stores for teen girls and young women, said total sales for the month rose 21% to $36 million from a year earlier.

Pacific Sunwear, which runs stores selling surf-inspired clothes and urban fashions, said same-store sales rose 8% last month.

Same-store sales at the company’s dominant PacSun surfwear chain rose 9% during the period. D.e.m.o., which sells hip-hop clothes and has struggled this year, grew nearly 3% in same-store sales.

Pacific Sunwear has seen slower growth this year with cooling at PacSun and fashion stumbles at d.e.m.o. The results are the company’s second straight strong showing after beating sales estimates in September.

Total sales for October rose 17% to $88 million, Pacific Sunwear said.

Pacific Sunwear upped its forecast for the recently ended quarter. The company is set to report results Nov. 10.

Profits could come in about 5% higher than what it and analysts earlier expected, the company said.
