Auto Sales Mixed in May

Orange County-based automakers reported mixed May auto sales on Wednesday.

Cypress-based Mitsubishi Motors North America Inc. said it sold 11,380 autos in May, down 30% from a year ago. In April, Mitsubishi sold 9,230 autos.

A unit of Japan’s Mitsubishi Motors Corp., the automaker has been struggling to reverse slumping sales for the past year. Part of the recent decline stems from fewer sales to rental agencies and other fleet buyers. The automaker said all of its current models beat April results.

Fountain Valley-based Hyundai Motor America reported May sales rose slightly to 40,416 autos. The company, a unit of South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Co., sold 40,337 cars and trucks a year ago.

Hyundai said it sold 5,723 new Tucson sports utiltiy vehicles in May.

Irvine’s Mazda North American Operations, a unit of Japan’s Mazda Motor Corp., sold 26,657 autos in May, down 3% from a year earlier.

Mazda sold 21,133 cars in May, up 14% from a year earlier. Truck sales fell 38% to 5,524.

Irvine-based Kia Motors America posted a slight increase in May auto sales to 25,503, up from 25,443 a year earlier.

Kia, part of Kia Motors Corp. in South Korea, said its Sedona minivan had its second-best sales month with 7,624 sales, up 16% from a year ago. Hyundai Motor and other Hyundai units own a majority of Kia, which is run independently.

Brea-based American Suzuki Motor Corp. said its May sales were up 1% from a year ago.

The U.S. arm of Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corp. said it sold 7,457 autos in the month.
