Most Local Automakers Cheer Nov.

All but two local automakers posted sales gains in November, with Kia Motors America again making the list of decliners.

Irvine-based Kia said sales last month dropped 13.7%, the second consecutive double-digit decline for the automaker. It sold 20,091 vehicles in November.

Kia had been posting sales growth of 5% to 10% a month earlier this year before slowing to a 2% gain in September.

Last month, Kia, an affiliate of South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Co., replaced former U.S. chief Peter Butterfield with Len Hunt, who hailed from Volkswagen AG.

Volvo Cars of North America LLC, the largest unit of Ford Motor Co.’s Irvine-based Premier Automotive Group, was the only other decliner among locals. Its November sales dropped 25.5% to 8,111 vehicles.

Meanwhile, Mitsubishi Motors North America Inc. logged a gain, its third up month in the past four.

Cypress-based Mitsubishi Motors, part of Japan’s Mitsubishi Motors Corp., posted a 7.2% sales increase in November from a year ago. Mitsubishi, which has been working to reverse a past slump, sold 8,902 vehicles in the month.

“We continue to believe that rebuilding our brand is a matter of succeeding one step at a time, one month at a time, one new model at a time,” said David Schembri, Mitsubishi’s executive vice president of sales and marketing, in a statement.

Mazda North American Operations, an Irvine-based unit of Japan’s Mazda Motor Corp., sold 17,817 autos in November, up 1% from a year earlier.

Fountain Valley-based Hyundai Motor America Inc., a unit of Korea’s Hyundai Motor, saw sales rise 12.5% to 33,383 for the month.

Brea-based American Suzuki Motor Corp., the U.S. arm of Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corp., said its November sales were up 14% to 5,707 autos in the month.
