Pelican May Shoot For Pebble Prices; Scalia at Chapman

The Irvine Company’s closing of its two Pelican Hill golf courses while it adds a hotel and villas has raised speculation that when they reopen in 2007 one of the courses will become a private club. The company has had that option under its Coastal Commission approvals. But the Insider hears that’s unlikely, that Donald Bren’s lieutenants prefer his buddy (and TIC director) Peter Ueberroth’s Pebble Beach approach: Have courses so compelling that the public will pay almost anything and you’ll earn more than with memberships. Legendary Pebble’s green fee is $450 and companions Spyglass and Spanish Bay are $290 and $230, respectively. Pelican’s at $250, how high can it go? Tom Fazio is coming back for “enhancements” to the Pelican courses …

Almost six years after Clarence Thomas helped to dedicate the law school building, another conservative Supreme, Antonin Scalia, will visit Chapman U. To help celebrate the law school’s 10th anniversary on Aug. 29, Scalia will lecture and join in a re-enactment of the famous 1905 Lochner v. New York labor case. Scalia will play anti-regulatory Chief Justice Melville Weston Fuller while Chapman prof John Eastman (a former Thomas law clerk) will argue the bakery worker’s side. And the star power doesn’t end there: state Attorney General Bill Lockyer has agreed to play the counsel for the state of New York …

The artistic tastes of partner Steve Bren (son of Donald) are on display at the Irvine Spectrum office of developer Brenexus. Through Oct. 31 the company’s Chevron Gallery is featuring three dozen works by Edward Ruscha, Frank Gehry, Don Bachardy, Ed Moses and other famous L.A. compatriots, most of whom attended the recent launch party. Some pieces are for sale, including a Billy Al Bengston marked at $350,000. For a tour call (949) 683-7026, but keep in mind the gallery feeds into offices. Employees come and go; when EE RR visited, Bren wasn’t in but he’d parked a couple of Bugatti motorcycles amid the art.
