Al Punto Ad’s Coming Attraction: Hispanic Art Gallery

Al Punto Advertising Inc. is launching an art gallery devoted to Hispanic art that is set to occupy the lower floor and lobby at its Tustin headquarters.

For the opening exhibit, the ad shop is inviting students from the country’s art and design schools to participate in a photo contest depicting Hispanic life and attitude in the U.S.

The gallery is part of the agency’s 10th aynniversary celebration. The works of 10 contest finalists will be shown. Top prizes include $500 or $1,000 in art supplies. The deadline for entries is March 15; the gallery’s grand opening is set for the first quarter.

The agency hopes to change exhibits on a quarterly basis, though specific plans still are in the works.

Meanwhile, al Punto took a top honor at the Latino Marketing Awards in November. The shop won for its launch of an outdoor, direct mail and TV campaign for telecommunications client Telscape Communications Inc. of Monrovia.

Telscape is a local, long distance and international phone company that provides services targeted to the Hispanic community. It operates a fully bilingual phone network and provides bilingual billing and technical support.

The award was based on marketing activities in the Las Vegas and Fresno/Bakersfield markets.

Al Punto’s client roster includes InterContinental Hotels Group PLC, Universal Studios Hollywood, Sempra Energy, ConAgra Foods and The Gas Company.

The agency ranked No. 14 on the Business Journal’s most recent list of advertising agencies in March, with $30 million in annual Orange County capitalized billings.

Meet JobFinder

JobFinder Weekly, a publication geared to entry-level, hourly workers, is set to launch this week. The publication is a product of Freedom Orange County Information, a unit of Irvine-based Freedom Communications Inc., which publishes the Orange County Register. It will be distributed at 350 store locations in OC and Corona.

Initially, the company plans to print roughly 12,000 copies of the tabloid-format publication.

Recruitment classified manager Peggy Blevins said in a release that JobFinder is intended to reach job hunters in areas they visit frequently, such as the Employment Development Department, 7-Eleven, Blockbuster Video, Bally Total Fitness, Albertson’s, Ralphs, Vons and local schools.

JobFinder will include classified and display ads plus articles about resume writing, interviewing and overviews of various careers.

Year-Round Branding

Scrambling for Pageant of the Masters tickets is a time-honored tradition in OC, where residents and visitors line up each summer day at dawn for a chance to see the “living pictures” show.

During the past few years, the Festival of Arts, which runs the pageant, has used an ad campaign to tout the show and maybe help some bewildered gift-seekers during the winter holidays, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day.

The current ad campaign features a stocking with a “Stuff It” tag line.

“There’s increased year-round brand awareness that builds recognition and anticipation for our summertime events,” said Sharbie Higuchi, the festival’s director of marketing and public relations.

Higuchi said the year-round sales also help the Festival’s cash flow.

The 2004 pageant was sold out before opening night, Higuchi said. More than 210,000 people attended both the pageant and festival.

“It was one of the most successful (years) on record,” said President Anita Mangels at a recent membership meeting.

The year-round marketing effort includes publicizing the next year’s theme at the end of each festival/pageant season.

Next summer’s show under pageant director Diane Challis Davy features Route 66 and the art linked to museums and destinations along that highway. The show, called “On the Road,” also will take visitors on a trip along the Silk Road of China and a circus road show.

Tickets for the 2005 pageant went on sale Dec. 1.

Last year the festival and pageant generated $7.9 million in gross income, with a net profit of $273,000. As a nonprofit, the festival reinvests the funds into its capital improvement programs.

Call for Creatives

The international competition for Summit Creative Awards has become a magnet for small firms worldwide.

The awards are given to advertising, public relations and multimedia companies with annual billings under $20 million.

2004 winners included 2Advanced Studios LLC of Aliso Viejo, for its own Web site. The shop was the only OC firm among the 66 winners.

Next year, awards will be presented in 18 categories, including a new category for students.

To obtain an entry kit, visit www.SummitAwards.com or call (503) 297-9979; entries must be received by Jan. 28.
