Fame and Fortune

Fame and Fortune

Orange County long has been a haven for the Hollywood set.

In the 1960s, John Wayne moved from Beverly Hills to Newport Beach’s Bayshore Drive until his 1979 death. Charlie Chaplin once lived in Laguna Beach. In 1926, actress Mary Pickford cut the ribbon to open a new stretch of Pacific Coast Highway in Laguna.

Since then, a host of Hollywood legends have come and gone from OC’s list of notable residents: Bette Davis, Judy Garland, Rudolf Valentino, Shirley Temple, Bette Midler and Candice Bergen.

OC still counts celebrities, though none as big as some of its past names. These days, rock stars are as common as actors. While none of the celebrities we found make our wealthiest listings, here are some local notables:

& #149; Actress Heather Locklear and husband Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi

& #149; Mark McGrath, singer of the band Sugar Ray

& #149; James “Munky” Shaffer and David Silveria of the band Korn. Silvera recently opened a sushi bar on Main Street in Huntington Beach

& #149; Billy Zoom, guitarist for seminal punk band X

& #149; Mamie Van Doren, a 1950s blonde bombshell

& #149; Bill Mauldin, Pulitzer Prize winning World War II cartoonist

& #149; Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers

& #149; Joey Bishop, the last living Rat Pack member

& #149; Dustin Diamond, also known as Screech from TV’s “Saved by the Bell”

& #149; Tiiu Leek, former anchor at KTLA, and actress who played a reporter in “The Practice” and “NYPD Blue”
