Indexes fell in midday trading after investors saw weak earnings reports by some companies and indications that the Federal Reserve will tighten its monetary policy to fight inflation.
The S&P; 500 dropped 1.8% to 4,315.12.
The Dow 30 slid 1.7% to 34,194.06.
The Nasdaq was off 1.8% at 12,944.16.
Oil fell 1.4% to $102.31 a barrel.
Gold slumped 0.5% to $1,938 an ounce.
The yield on a 10-year bond retreated 0.5% to 2.903%.
Glaukos Corp. (NYSE: GKOS) dropped 6.9% to $55.83 per share and a $2.6 billion market cap. Technologies by the San Clemente provider of glaucoma treatments will be featured at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery annual meeting in Washington D.C.—one of the largest gatherings for medical personnel in the ophthalmic industry—beginning today and ending April 26.
The Ensign Group Inc. (Nasdaq: ENSG) fell 6.2% to $81.90 per share and a $4.6 billion market cap. Shares for the San Juan Capistrano nursing home owner-operator have been off about 13% from their 52-week high last month.
