Three out of four Orange County-based automakers exceeded the national sales pace for new vehicles in January, according to New Jersey-based market researcher Autodata Corp.

U.S. auto sales declined 1.8% year-over-year, adding 1.1 million cars and light trucks, and are on track to reach 17.6 million for the year.

Hyundai Motor America in Fountain Valley sold 46,507 vehicles, up 3.3% and its best January ever. The total includes 1,818 Genesis vehicles.

“The Genesis brand continues to build on the momentum set in December with sales up 5% over last month,” Erwin Raphael, general manager of Genesis in the U.S. market, said in a statement.

Kia Motors America Inc. in Irvine sold 35,626 vehicles, down 7%.

Mazda North American Operations in Irvine was up 10.1%—its best January sales in five years.

Cypress-based Mitsubishi Motors North America Inc. sold 6,457 vehicles, up 3.1%.
