JWA January: More Fliers, Fewer Flights

A trend that has run about six months continued in January at John Wayne Airport as the facility saw increased passenger counts on fewer commercial flights.

Airlines flying more efficiently out of the local airport has been a feature of operations since last summer.

Passenger traffic grew 2.5% to about 737,000 in January 2015 compared with about 718,000 in January 2014.

Commercial aircraft takeoffs and landings declined 1.7% from about 6,400 to about 6,300 in the same period.

Total takeoffs and landings grew about 7% year-over-year to nearly 21,000 compared with about 19,000, with a boost again from general aviation, which was up about 12% in the same January-to-January comparison.

General aviation—a category that includes corporate and individual charter service—accounts for two-thirds of the airport’s total takeoffs and landings.

The three busiest commercial airlines at John Wayne Airport in January were Southwest, with about 317,400 passengers, United, with about 103,300 passengers, and American, with about 101,700 passengers.
