The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.59% to 16,681.80, while the Nasdaq was up 1.46% to 4,131.33.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond rose 1.18% to 2.65%.
The price of gold was up 0.58% to $1,295.10 per ounce.
Santa Ana technology products distributor Ingram Micro Inc. was up about 3% to $26.74 after Stifel Nicolaus upgraded the company's stock from "hold" to "buy." Ingram Micro had a recent market value of $4.15 billion.
Huntington Beach-based Quiksilver Inc. was up about 4% to $6.59 for a market value of $1.12 billion. Goldman Sachs on Thursday reiterated its "buy" rating on the company's stock, citing progress in the company’s turnaround.
Irvine medical device maker Masimo Corp. rose about 8% to $23.74 for a market value of $1.35 billion.
