Samsung Galaxy 5 Has New Broadcom Technology

Samsung Electronics Co.’s highly touted smartphone released last month is carrying several Broadcom Corp. technologies, including a key combo chip that enables a clearer and more powerful Wi-Fi signal and increases power efficiency.

That means Samsung Galaxy 5 owners can send photos quicker from crowded events such as baseball games and concerts, get faster downloads, and surf the Web faster.

The latest-generation chip and design win from the Irvine-based company also eliminates dead spots in the home where router signals can’t reach and powers Bluetooth and FM radio applications, according to Ottawa, Ontario-based teardown.com.

A separate Broadcom chip in the smartphone enables GPS.

U.S. sales for the Galaxy S5 are off to a fast pace, eclipsing Apple Inc.’s iPhone 5S, which debuted in September. The S5 comprised 23% of total phones sold April 11 through April 13, compared to the iPhone, which nabbed about 18% of total phone purchases, according to a report by Vancouver, British Columbia-based retail management software company Qmetrix, which sampled data from more than 15,000 stores across North America.

Samsung, the world’s largest consumer electronics company, has distanced itself from smartphone rival Apple as Broadcom’s largest customer. The South Korea-based company accounted for 21.3%, or nearly $1.8 billion, of Broadcom’s $8.3 billion in sales last year.

That’s up from 17.3% in 2012. Samsung accounted for nearly a third of the 968 million smartphone units sold in 2013, according to Stamford, Conn.-based industry tracker Gartner Inc.

Ingram Plans Restructure

Santa Ana-based Ingram Micro Inc., on a recent conference call with analysts following its first-quarter earnings report, provided some details on its global restructuring initiative that aims to trim $80 million to $100 million in annual costs.

The plan, first announced in February, will shed employees from all of the company’s business regions and consolidate its mobility and distribution warehouses in Germany into one operation, Chief Executive Alain Monie said during the call.

Ingram will also shutter a warehouse in Belgium, rolling it into its Netherlands operations; close a regional headquarters in Brussels and move some of those operations to lower-cost locations in Europe; and transfer back-office functions to shared service centers in Bulgaria.

“These actions will result in sizable annual cost savings,” Monie said, but won’t materialize until the second half of the year.

Ingram, the world’s largest distributor of computers, software and other technology products, posted revenue of $10.4 billion in the recently ended quarter, in line with Wall Street estimates, and net income of nearly $68 million, which fell below expectations.

Irvine Firm Gets Airline Job

The Irvine operation of Cleveland-based Eaton Corp. will supply electric motorpumps for Spirit Airlines’ new fleet of Airbus A320 planes.

The value of the contract with the Miramar, Fla.-based airliner was undisclosed.

Eaton is the 15th largest aerospace and defense company with OC operations, employing 414 workers here, according to Business Journal research.

The company, which specializes in electrical, hydraulic and mechanical power management systems and equipment, posted sales of $22 billion last year.

The latest deal for Eaton underscores Orange County and Southern California’s legacy in aerospace technology. The industry no longer carries the prominence it had during the boom days of aviation but has resurged of late as global demand for new aircraft, primarily among foreign airlines, is expected to grow significantly over the next few decades.
