The S&P 500 was down 1.13% to 1,847.06 in afternoon trading Thursday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.23% to 16,138.96, while the Nasdaq slipped 1.57% to 4,255.35.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond was off 2.24% to 2.66%.
The price of gold rose 0.19% to $1,373.10 per ounce.
Irvine-based heart valve maker Edwards Lifesciences Corp. was down about 2% to $72.08 for a market value of $7.73 billion. Medical device makers were generally down, including rivals Medtronic Inc. and Boston Scientific Corp.
Homebuilders were generally down on Thursday, with Irvine-based Standard Pacific Corp. off the most among local builders by about 3% to $8.60 for a market value of $2.98 billion.
Newport Beach-based William Lyon Homes slipped about 1% to $29.27 for a market value of $908.25 million.
Irvine-based TRI Pointe Homes Inc. was also down about 1% to $17.07 and a market value of $539.63 million.
