The S&P 500 was flat at 1,980.43 in midday trading Tuesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.14% to 17,006.32, while the Nasdaq was up 0.34% to 4,460.06

The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond fell 0.72% to 2.47%.

The price of gold was down 0.35% to $1,298.70.


Santa Ana based insurer First American Financial Corp. was up 2.2% to $28 and a market capitalization of $3 billion. While second quarter operating income missed consensus estimates, its total revenue of $1.15 billion beat estimates, and expenses were lower, while earnings improved 48.3% year-over-year.


Irvine-based automobile finance company Consumer Portfolio Services rose 11% to $7.32 and a market cap of $183.2 million on high volume and positive financial results. It reported earnings of $7 million, or 22 cents per diluted share, up 47% compared to the same period last year. By midday, it had traded more than 251,000 shares, versus a 90-day average of 144,417.
