The S&P 600 was up 1.24% to 1,796.22 in afternoon trading Thursday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.85% to 15,873.17, while the Nasdaq rose 1.93% to 4,129.72.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond was up 1.01% to 2.70%.
The price of gold was off 1.53% to $1,242.90 per ounce.
QLogic Corp. shares were up about 8% to $11.76, a day after the Aliso Viejo-based networking equipment maker reported better-than-expected results for the December quarter. QLogic had a recent market value of $1.02 billion.
Aliso Viejo-based drug maker Avanir Pharmaceuticals Inc. was up about 7% to $3.71 for a market value of $564.31 million. The company said it filed an application with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its migraine treatment AVP-825.
Huntington Beach-based Quiksilver Inc. rose about 4% to $7.25, after closing down 6% on Wednesday. The company had a recent market value of $1.23 billion.
