The S&P 500 fell 0.18% to 1,842.51 in afternoon trading Friday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.30% to 16,465.52, while the Nasdaq slipped 0.27% to 4,207.33.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond was down 0.39% to 2.83%.
The price of gold was up 0.91% to $1,251.50 per ounce.
Irvine-based heart valve maker Edwards Lifesciences Corp. was off about 4% to $69.42 for a market value of $7.59 billion. Edwards rival Medtronic Inc. said Friday that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted early approval of its heart valve replacement system, CoreValve, in the U.S.
Huntington Beach-based BJ's Restaurants Inc. was down about 5% to $28.99, a day after the restaurant operator warned that its preliminary fourth-quarter earnings will come in below consensus estimates after a dip in traffic and spending late in the quarter. Sterne Agee downgraded the company's stock from "buy" to "neutral."
