The S&P 500 was up 0.02% to 1,837.71 in afternoon trading Friday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.19% to 16,412.93, while the Nasdaq rose 0.07% to 4,159.06.

The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond fell 3.10% to 2.87%.

The price of gold was up 1.42% to $1,246.80 per ounce.


Shares of action sports retailer Pacific Sunwear of California Inc. were off about 14% to $2.95, a day after the company lowered its guidance for the January quarter on a weaker-than-expected holiday selling season. The company had a recent market value of $202.26 million


Newport Beach-based William Lyon Homes was up 6% to $22.69 for a market value of $713.57 million. The homebuilder announced an exchange offer on Thursday for senior notes it issued back in October.

Irvine-based TRI Pointe Homes shares were off about 6% to $17.40 for a market value of $549.79 million. FBR Capital Markets downgraded the company's stock from "outperform" to "market perform."
