The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.08% to 16,454.71, while the Nasdaq was off 0.28% to 4,131.32.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond slipped 0.03% to 2.98%.
The price of gold rose 1.08% to $1,238.40 per ounce.
Irvine professional services firm Resources Connection Inc. rose about 6% to $15.04 a day after reporting better-than-expected second-quarter results. Robert W. Baird & Company Inc. raised Resources Connection's price target from $13 to $16 on the quarterly update. It had a recent market value of $597.45 million.
Irvine-based CorVel Corp. was up about 2% to $48.20 for a market value of $1.01 billion. A report from investor website Seeking Alpha predicts the company will see revenue grow under the Affordable Care Act as companies look to trim costs. CorVel provides workers' compensation software and services to the healthcare industry.
