The S&P 500 slipped 0.44% to 1,691.12 in afternoon trading Friday.
The Dow Jones industrial average was down 0.51% to 15,250.08, while the Nasdaq was off 0.13% to 3,782.52.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond fell 1.17% to 2.61%.
The price of gold rose 1.05% to $1,338 per ounce.
Irvine-based chipmaker Broadcom Corp. was down about 2% to $25.72 for a market value of $14.89 billion.
Piper Jaffray reiterated its "neutral" rating on San Diego-based rival Qualcomm Inc. while lowering the company's price target to $66. Qualcomm was trading down about 2% to $67.43 for a market capitalization of $115.67 billion.
Huntington Beach-based BJ's Restaurants Inc. shares were off about 2% to $28.67 for a market value of $808.32 million. Restaurant operators were generally mixed on Friday.
