The S&P 500 was up 0.27% to 1,706.47 in afternoon trading Tuesday.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.16% to 15,425.40, while the Nasdaq rose 0.58% to 3,787.24.

The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond slipped 2.43% to 2.65%.

The price of gold fell 0.84% to $1,315.90 per ounce.


Shares of Irvine medical device maker Biolase Inc. were up about 12% to $2.09 after the company announced a $5 million sale of its stock by Boston-based investment firm Camber Capital Management LLC. Biolase had a recent market value of $71.38 million.


Local homebuilders were up on Tuesday, along with the rest of their industry peers, after Miami-based Lennar Corp. and KB Home of Los Angeles reported better-than-expected third-quarter earnings.

Irvine-based Standard Pacific Corp. was up about 4% to $8.20 for a market value of $2.85 billion.

TRI Pointe Homes Inc., also of Irvine, was up about 4% to $14.90 for a market value of $470.80 million.

Newport Beach-based William Lyon Homes rose about 2% to $20.59 for a market value of $647.29 million.
