The S&P 500 slipped 0.08% to 1,703.33 in afternoon trading Wednesday.
The Dow Jones industrial average was off 0.24% to 15,492.90, while the Nasdaq was down 0.10% to 3,741.96.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond was flat at 2.85%.
The price of gold fell 0.08% to $1,308.40 per ounce.
Irvine-based heart valve maker Edwards Lifesciences Corp. was down about 2% to $70.02 for a market value of $7.86 billion. A federal judge ruled in favor of Edwards rival Medtronic Inc. in a patent case saying Medtronic’s patents were valid.
Irvine real estate investor Sabra Health Care REIT Inc. was up about 2% to $22.98, after Jefferies & Co. upgraded the company's stock from "hold" to "buy." Sabra had a recent market value of $857.91 million.
