The S&P 500 rose 0.42% to 1,752.03 in afternoon trading Tuesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.32% to 15,442.16, while the Nasdaq was up 0.05% to 3,922.10.

The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond fell 3.30% to 2.52%.

The price of gold rose 1.98% to $1,341.90 per ounce.


Shares of Irvine-based TRI Pointe Homes Inc. continued their rise from Monday, up about 5% to $15.65 for a market value of $494.49 million. The company closed up about 6% on Monday after Reuters, citing unnamed sources, reported that the homebuilder is in "advanced talks" to pay $2.7 billion for the homebuilding unit of Weyerhaeuser Co.


Aliso Viejo-based chipmaker Microsemi Corp.’s shares rose about 3% to $26.35, after the company said on Monday that it will pay about $230 million for Symmetricom Inc.


San Clemente medical device maker ICU Medical Inc. was up about 4% to $66.37 for a market value of $972.32 million. The company reported better-than-expected third-quarter results on Monday. It also announced the departure of its chief executive, George Lopez, citing health reasons.


Huntington Beach-based BJ's Restaurants Inc. was up about 3% to $29.41 for a market value of $829.07 million. Restaurant companies were generally mixed on Tuesday.
