The S&P 500 rose 1.64% to 1,683.63 in afternoon trading Thursday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 1.57% to 15,036.08, while the Nasdaq was up 1.93% to 3,748.94.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond rose 2.15% to 2.71%.
The price of gold slipped 0.73% to 1,297.60 per ounce.
Anaheim-based drug maker Questcor Pharmaceuticals Inc. rose 8.5% to $59.24 for a market value of $3.49 billion. The company said Thursday it will raise its quarterly dividend by 20% to 30 cents to be paid Oct. 30. Questcor cited increased usage of its sole drug H.P. Acthar gel along with the company’s generally strong financial performance as the reason for the bump.
Huntington Beach-based Quiksilver Inc. was up about 5% to $6.92 for a market value of $1.16 billion.
Anaheim food manufacturer Bridgford Foods Corp. was up 12% to $11 for a market value of $100.63 million. The company's shares are up about 42% so far this year.
