The S&P 500 was down about 0.78% to 1,663.03 in afternoon trading Tuesday.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.61% to 14,845.85, while the Nasdaq slipped 1.61% to 3,709.71.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond was off 0.23% to 2.63%.
The price of gold was down 0.17% to $1,322.80 per ounce.
Clean Energy Fuels Corp. fell about 8% to $11.90 after Piper Jaffray Cos. reiterated its "sell" rating on the company's stock. Clean Energy had a recent market value of $1.06 billion.
Huntington Beach-based BJ's Restaurants Inc. was up about 3% to $28.68 for a market value of $808.60 million. Restaurant companies were generally mixed on Tuesday.
