The S&P 500 fell 0.22% to 1,691.21 in afternoon trading Wednesday.

The Dow Jones industrial average was off 0.44% to 15,124.68, while the Nasdaq was down 0.14% to 3,812.51.

The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond slipped 1.10% to 2.62%.

The price of gold rose 2.28% to $1,315.40 per ounce.


Resources Connection Inc. shares were off about 11% to $12.23, a day after the professional services firm reported disappointing results for the quarter ended Aug. 24. The Irvine-based company had a recent market value of $487.73 million.


Newport Beach-based Clean Energy Fuels Corp. continued its rise from Tuesday, up about 2% to $13.86 for a market value of $1.24 billion. Clean Energy closed up about 4% on Tuesday when the company was expected to make a big announcement. That news was postponed until Thursday due to the government shutdown.

Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide Inc. shares rose about 8% to $3.69 for a market value of $55.18 million. Lake Forest-based Quantum announced $500,000 in new orders for its compressed natural gas fuel storage tanks.
