The S&P 500 slipped 0.26% to 1,786.87 in afternoon trading Tuesday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.10% to 15,959.93, while the Nasdaq was off 0.47% to 3,930.44.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond rose 0.52% to 2.69%.
The price of gold was up 0.09% to $1,273.40 per ounce.
Costa Mesa networking equipment maker Emulex Corp. was down about 3% to $7.43 for a market value of $681.50 million. The company said last week that Executive Chairman and former Chief Executive Jim McCluney's employment at the company will end Feb. 6.
Lake Forest-based Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide Inc. shares were off about 12% to $6.30 for a market value of $78.46 million. The company's stock is up about 148% since the start of the year.
Anaheim drug maker Questcor Pharmaceuticals Inc. was up about 3% to $61.74 for a market value of $3.64 billion.
