Update on Augie; Pelican Hill Preview; Yorba Linda Listed

Augie Nieto always has plenty to do, whether it’s guiding his Augie’s Quest and its ALS Therapy Development Institute in the fight to cure amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or serving as chairman of elliptical maker Octane Fitness. He’ll be busier still, now that he’s taken a seat on the board of fitness center operator Curves International. Then there are family matters—which lately have brought two generations’ worth of button-bursting for Nieto and his wife, Lynne. “Our daughters, Nicole and Danielle, each gave birth to a grandbaby this year—I’m so proud to be called Pops!,” Nieto recently told the folks at the Today Show. “We have two beautiful, healthy grandchildren—Scarlett and Michael. Our son, Austin, is getting married in January, and our daughter, Lindsay, is getting married next July.” Nieto was diagnosed with ALS eight years ago and was soon confined to a wheelchair, able to move little more than his toes. Most ALS patients are expected to die within three to five years of diagnosis. Nieto’s gotten awfully good at confounding expectations—he’s getting out of his wheelchair these days, with a specific purpose in mind. “I want to walk Lindsay down the aisle,” he said. “I know I’m going to make this happen. I feel good.” …

Jim Palmer, long-time president of the OC Rescue Mission, is not only one of the most resourceful guys around, he’s one of the nicest. He recently marked the end of a six-year presidential appointment by sending thank-you notes and White House lapel pins to about 70 friends. Palmer was on the board of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which oversees such initiatives as AmeriCorps. Here at home, Palmer continues to grow the Tustin-based mission, which now has nine campuses for the homeless. …

Irvine Company’s Resort at Pelican Hill opened its doors just as the Great Recession got a definitive grip on the economy in late 2008. Maybe that explains what appears to be a nod to a touchstone of the Great Depression among the plans to celebrate Pelican Hill’s fifth birthday. The invite-only festivities include a “Fifth Anniversary Fireside Chat” set for Nov. 22. President Franklin Roosevelt made his fireside chats—radio talks on Depresssion-era challenges—famous in the 1930s. The Pelican Hill version will feature six guests who “will share the inside scoop on the making of a resort of timeless vision and beauty” …

Seems Yorba Linda came out of the recession OK, at least according to personal finance website Nerdwallet.com’s recent ranking of the top 20 cities in the U.S. for income growth from 2007 to 2011. The North OC city ranked No. 4, with a 20.4% increase to an average individual income of $59,690. It was the only OC city on the list and one of six in California, which had an even north-south split, with Victorville, 12th, and Pasadena, 20th, making a SoCal match of the NorCal trio of Chico, 1st, Merced, 12th, and Mountain View, 15th …

The Insider wonders: Are the few koi fish that hang out in Lakeshore Towers’ namesake body of water behind Il Fornaio lonely or just lucky? …

Noticed this at Prego, then Il Fornaio—so it must be true. Seems the skinny-suit trend has peaked—we can only hope it fades from here—and that vested three-piece numbers are coming back into vogue … A loyal reader tells the Insider something that UCI neuroscientist Dr. James Fallon didn’t know when he set out to write “The Psychopath Inside: A Neuroscientist’s Personal Journey into the Dark Side of the Brain.” Fallon’s research indicated that he has family ties to the dark side—he’s a distant relative of Lizzy Borden of ax-murder fame. The book was released—of course—on Halloween.
