The S&P 500 rose 0.49% to 1,658.39 in afternoon trading Wednesday.
The Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.37% to 15,270.89, while the Nasdaq was up 0.14% to 3,467.60.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond rose 0.20% to 1.96%.
The price of gold was off 2% to $1,396 per ounce.
Santa Ana-based for-profit school operator Corinthian Colleges Inc. continued its rise from Tuesday, with shares up 5% to $2.29, for a market value of $197.44 million. Corinthian's shares closed up about 8% on Tuesday after competitor Apollo Group Inc. said it received a recommendation from the Higher Learning Commission Institutional Actions Council to have its accreditation for the University of Phoenix reaffirmed for 10 years.
