The S&P 500 was up 0.65% to 1,622.98 in afternoon trading Thursday.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.54% to 15,075.53, while the Nasdaq rose 0.60% to 3,420.94.

The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond was off 2.33% to 2.18%.

The price of gold slipped 0.95% to $1,378.90 per ounce.


Irvine-based heart valve maker Edwards Lifesciences Corp. rose about 4% to $70.71 for a market value of $7.99 billion. Analysts at Credit Suisse upgraded Edwards’ shares from “neutral” to “outperform,” while Canaccord reiterated its “buy” rating earlier this week.


Irvine-based homebuilder Standard Pacific Corp. rose about 3% to $8.60 for a market value of $2.98 billion. Homebuilders were generally up on Thursday.


Irvine-based Newport Corp. was up about 4% to $13.51 for a market value of $527.97 million.

The company recently released new mounting equipment for use with optical tables. Newport makes industrial lasers and other gear used by medical companies, chipmakers and manufacturers among other groups.


Irvine-based professional services firm Resources Connection Inc. was up about 3% to $11.52 with staffing companies generally up on Thursday. Resources Connection had a recent market value of $469.96 million.
