The S&P 500 was down 0.15% to 1,649.82 in afternoon trading Wednesday.
The Dow Jones industrial average was off 0.19% to 15,271.54, while the Nasdaq was up 0.16% to 3,509.89.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond rose 1.10% to 2.66%.
The price of gold was off 0.54% to $1,252.60 per ounce.
Costa Mesa-based Emulex Corp. rose about 6% to $8.37 for a market value of $760.49 million. New York investment firm Starboard Value LP disclosed in a Monday filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission Monday that it had acquired a 6.9% stake in Emulex. Reports surfaced earlier this month that the networking equipment maker hired Goldman Sachs to explore a possible sale of the company.
Irvine-based Quality Systems Inc. rose about 2% to $19.81 for a market value of $1.18 billion.
